An upside-down pentagram rests above his brow. Below him stand a naked man and woman, tethered by thick iron chains to his perch. If you look closely at their necks, though, the loops are loose enough to slip right over their heads. Both figures have sprouted small horns and animal tails, representing their slow surrender to primal impulses and material fixation. Associated with Capricorn, the card mirrors earthbound gravity, illustrating how easily we mistake temporary attachments for permanent cages. ## Upright meaning Late evening is when the card usually knocks, right around the time you find yourself scrolling social media for the fourth hour, pouring a third drink you do not actually want, or opening a text thread you swore you would delete. The Devil does not arrive to condemn you; it shows up to expose where you trade long-term freedom for quick hits of comfort or control. Linked to Capricorn, this card deals with worldly desires, status cravings, and the sneaky belief that outside circumstances hold all the power over your choices. In reality, the collar around your neck is wide open. You might feel locked into an exhausting routine or a dynamic where you constantly play along to keep the peace. Acknowledge the comfort you get from playing victim or repeating the loop, because once you admit you chose the habit, you regain the leverage to walk away from it. ## Reversed meaning When The Devil turns upside down, the spell breaks and the lights click on. You are finally ready to see a tired habit or limiting arrangement for what it truly is, without making excuses for yourself or anyone else. This card does not mean the underlying tension vanishes overnight, but it marks the exact moment you realize you can take the collar off and step backward. Maybe you quietly unsubscribed from shopping apps that drain your paycheck, declined an invitation to gossip with coworkers, or admitted that an old grudge is doing nothing but keeping you miserable. Associated with Capricorn's discipline, the reversal invites you to reclaim your personal agency through small, consistent acts of self-honesty. You do not need to stage a dramatic rebellion or burn bridges. Just stop feeding the beast, choose your long-term sanity over a fleeting dopamine rush, and watch the illusion dissolve. ## In love In romance, this card spotlights co-dependency, jealousy, and electric chemistry that might border on obsession. You could be obsessing over read receipts, staying silent about major differences to preserve physical intimacy, or letting control games masquerade as passion. Chemistry is fun, but not when it costs your peace of mind. Check whether you are showing up as an equal partner or hiding your authentic needs just to keep someone on the hook. Mutual respect needs space to breathe, not chains. ## In career At work, The Devil points to golden handcuffs, burnout culture, or staying at a miserable desk simply because the title sounds impressive. You might feel trapped under a demanding boss or an unspoken rule to answer emails at midnight. Remember that Capricorn understands structures, but also knows when a structure has turned toxic. Reassess your daily boundaries. You do not have to quit tomorrow, but you must stop convincing yourself that misery is the only way to earn security. ## Advice Stop pretending you have no choice in the matter. Look honestly at the habit or dynamic draining your vitality, slip out of the loose chain, and make one concrete move toward your independence today. *Author: [Theo Marlowe](https://12horoscope.com/en/authors/theo-marlowe) (pen name) · Published: 2026-10-10 · Updated: 2026-10-10* Tarot is a tool for reflection.
